Acetic Acid reacts with Sulfuric Acid to form what?

We did a lab where we mixed excess acetic acid with isopentyl alcohol to form isopentyl acetate. But along with those two, we also added sulfuric acid. What was the purpose of the sulfuric acid and what does it do when reacting with acetic acid?
