Sky hd to samsung home cinema?

I have just bought a samsung C350 home cinema dvd, I already own a hd sony bravia all hdmi. Just bought an optic lead to connect the tv and HC when quell surpris no sound, even out of my apple tv, after following the instructions in the manual no sound from the D-IN option. Any help please before I launch the kit back thru currys window
